The brief was clear: vacate the existing office at the end of the lease, install the server environment in the new location, and have staff working as normal on Monday morning. The client’s IT team supervised the re-racking and reconnection process, while the relocation crew handled positioning, lifting and packaging removal. Start planning as soon as a new office location is under consideration. The communications room should be assessed before fit-out decisions are finalised, particularly where rack size, cooling, power resilience, cable routes and physical security are concerned. If the environment is not ready, moving the equipment last-minute will not solve the problem.
It is also sensible to separate the critical path from the wider office move. Desks, chairs and archive boxes can often be delivered across a broader period. Servers, switches, firewalls and storage devices require their own method statement, handling plan and recovery schedule. Treating them as another item on a removal list is a preventable risk.
For organisations moving multiple sites, the same principles apply at greater scale. A phased programme may be safer than moving all infrastructure at once, especially where services must remain available to regional teams, customers or remote users.
